Outing Club's Californing 2011 Tour
The Outing Club took a trip to California during Spring Recess in April. A total of 20 students and 6 faculty members flew to California to experience a 9-day West Coast Tour that began Death Valley National Park. The group hiked Golden Canyon, visited Ubehebe Crater, Mosaic Sand Dunes, Ryolite Ghost Town and Scotty's Castle before heading to Yosemite National Park. There they hiked the Upper Yosemite Falls trail, saw the Toulomne giant sequoias and camped. They went sea kayaking on Cambria Bay, visited Hearst Castle, and camped and hiked in Pinnacles National Monument. Finally the club spent two nights in the Fort Mason Hostel of San Francisco where they visited the Exploratorium and attended a Giants vs. Braves baseball game. In addition to participating in outdoor activities, Outing Club students camp, cook and clean up after meals, said Mrs. Deborah Gaddy, co-faculty advisor. "The students pay for this trip and have been saving their money for a year."" Co-faculty advisor Mr. John Gaddy, who is also a BCS secondary science teacher, weaves science education into the itinerary.
