Recently Bolton Central School’s 5th grade class visited Mt. Van Hoevenberg to watch bobsledding and skeleton events, part of the IBSF (International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation) World Cup. Skeleton is a winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled, known as a skeleton bobsled (or bobsleigh), down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first. The site is a venue known for its bobsled and luge tracks. The event was organized by the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and the IBSF. Students had a front seat to witness how bobsledding involves the physics of gravity, friction, and aerodynamics, where athletes aim to maximize acceleration and minimize forces that slow the sled down, resulting in high speeds and intense G-forces. It was a great opportunity for our students and we’re pretty sure we may have created a few new Bobsled and Skeleton fans!
