Seven BCS 8th graders spent the day participating in a mini career expo to discover pathways in the trades at WSWHE BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) center recently.
The theme of the event was, “women need to see it to be it!” Students spent the day learning what it might be like in a trades class that they may not ordinarily be encouraged to take: welding, construction trades, heavy equipment, automotive technology, industrial and performance machining, HVAC-R, and environmental conservation. The hope is to spark an interest that might turn into a career! The students spent an afternoon exploring careers and hearing from industry experts! Thank you to WSHWE BOCES for creating this event and our school counseling team for making sure our students take advantage of these remarkable opportunities.
The US Department of Labor Statistics reports that women are substantially underrepresented (relative to their share of total employment) in agriculture, mining, construction, manufacturing, transportation, utilities and other skilled trades. The jobs that are available and will become available are suffering a shortage and women can help fill those gaps.
Having access to these opportunities can create the spark of interest to light the future!
