The most ideal way to start a journey is to become familiar with as many of your options as possible. At Bolton Central School, our students are exposed to a wide variety of career options and they are encouraged to investigate the jobs and livelihoods of those around them. It is never too soon to make these kinds of introductions.
Introduction to Occupations is a required course for our 9th grade students that provides a solid foundation of the career exploration process. The class is taught by Business/Computer Education teacher Jennifer Carlson and grades 8 – 12 School Counselor, Denise Clark. This course takes students through the career exploration process beginning with a personality mosaic to determine strengths, weaknesses and interests. Some of the topics that are covered include resume development, job interviews, banking and insurance and retirement planning just to name a few. Presenters from different fields are invited to speak. During their visits speakers describe their jobs and the tasks needed to succeed in their chosen field. In addition, there is discussion of any specific education or certification requirements and the positives and negatives of their responsibilities. This year there were a total of fifteen speakers.
Recently our students were visited by five members Warren County Court staff. Students were offered a glimpse into the courts’ inner workings and the diverse career opportunities within this career area. The group also reinforced the message of the importance of jury service as part of court system’s vital community role with the message, “Justice starts at jury. Jury starts with YOU.”
Our speakers shared their experiences and discussed the various career paths within the courts, including court officer, court clerk, court stenographer, commissioner of jurors, and judge. Students learned that many of these careers can be pursued either with or without a college degree. At the end of the presentation students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more.
Another engaging visit included Mrs. Heather Kennedy, M.S., CCC-SLP; CGCP; CDS ( Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, Certified Geriatric Care Professional, Certified Dementia Specialist) to share information about the fields of occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy. Mrs. Kennedy also set students up with activities designed to mimic limitations and what adjustments can be made to provide support or help strengthen those living with limitations. One exercise was trying to read something with a mouth full of bubble gum. Another task involved lifting and tossing a balloon with limited upper arm mobility.
Thanks to the initiative of our educators, students have access to opportunities that could lead to a career and also learn more about the industries in their local area. Building these types of connections, even if it just amounts to a better understanding of how the world around us works, is a valuable eye on the future!
Thank you, Mrs. Kennedy, and the members of the Warren County court system; Hon. Martin Auffredou, Kim Duskas, Stephanie Dillon. Casey Lopez and Wanda Smith. Your visits were engaging, inspiring and a great introduction to careers that are rewarding.
