Recently Mr. Sheridan’s Earth and Space Science students traveled to Ausable Chasm, the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks! Students hiked the steep paths of sandstone, a sedimentary rock that had been deposited over half-billion years ago at a time when the Adirondack Mountains were covered by a warm, shallow sea. Descending into the chasm, the students traveled back in time, until they reached the base of the chasm, a metamorphic rock that remains from the ancestral mountains of the region that once dominated the area, rising higher than the Himalayas. To finish their adventure. students climbed into rafts and navigated the tight bends and the unseasonably low and calm white water of the Ausable River.
