Youth & Government students were grateful to recently attend a District Conference to prepare for their State Convention in March. The conference was held in person at the Silver Bay YMCA Conference Facility. Six schools were able to safely send representatives. The hope is to once again be in the New York State Capitol building this March.

YMCA Youth & Government is a national program that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and literally practice democracy. The program culminates with teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of this legislature.

Among some of the initiatives students are working on are creating more harsh penalties associated with injury and/or death of a K9 police officer, reworking the definition of kidnapping in the first degree and removing the cash bail option for repeat offenders. Working through these steps in understanding how our democratic processes work are the building blocks of democracy itself.
