This year’s 1st grade class had a special visitor as part of their Iditarod study. Veterinarian Dr. John O’Connor came to talk to students about being on the Iditarod veterinary team on six occasions. He brought in his cold weather gear, boots and dog booties to show the class.

1st grade teacher Ms. Purdy uses the Iditarod dog sled races to discuss geography, time and temperature. Students also learn the story of Balto and the Blue Dawn and how the mushers and their dog teams saved the day during a diphtheria outbreak in 1925. The mushers and their teams were able to get medicine through to Nome in a blizzard, thanks to their teamwork and perseverance. Each year the class follows the race to apply a variety of math concepts and how to make comparisons.
